The Birth of Baron
Wilhelmus Coppenrath was born in 1935. Five years later, World War II began, and not long after, the war found its way to the Netherlands. Wil had to find a creative way to find food and water for his family.
1945
The second World War
During the war he learned to be creative, but he also discovered what it meant to work hard for what you want. With his creative and positive attitude he survived the war.
1953
Rum discovered in the port of Rotterdam
When he was older, he started working in the port of Rotterdam. One day he received a special gift from a captain who came with a ship from the Dominican Republic. This gift was a bottle of spiced. After work, Wil tasted this rum and immediately wanted to know more about this special drink. Unfortunately, when Wil tried to find the captain the next day, the ship had already left for its long journey home. During this period, Wil developed an interest in good quality rum and shared this passion with his friends.
1990
World tour to find the rum
Wil traveled the world to find more of this unique rum. He tasted different kinds of good rum all over the world and slowly developed an excellent taste for good (quality) rum. Wil made a habit of celebrating his successes with a bottle of rum he bought during his travels. He shared these moments with people he thought were worth drinking with.
2013
His grandson's barbershop
"Wil taught his grandsons to be gentlemen, he taught them how to surround themselves with people who will help them rise. He said you become a product of the people you spend time with. So you have to surround yourself with the best."
2018
The development of Baron Spiced Rum
"In 2018, they entrusted the Herman Janssen distillery with the task of recreating the original rum that Wil received 65 years ago. Baron Spiced Rum became a blend of an uncoloured rum, a 3-year-old rum and 3-5 year-old rums from the Dominican Republic, Guyana and Barbados. We created an exclusive mix of rum and spices that has an extraordinary taste, which is bottled in the finest bottles."

The launch on Friday the 13th

The Baron dies of corona †
It is with deep sadness that we announce that Wil Coppenrath, the Baron, passed away in hospital from COVID-19 on December 18th, just one month after the launch of Baron Spiced Rum. On his deathbed, he was proud of what he had accomplished, but also stressed the importance of new goals. He urged us to conquer Miami and make this a family legacy. His legacy will live on in the spirit of adventure and success that he left us with.

Family Legacy
Now, Wil Coppenrath’s grandson and nephews continue to run the business, bringing Baron Spiced Rum to new markets around the world. With a strong focus on growth and innovation, they are expanding into emerging markets such as China and other international regions. Their dedication ensures that the Baron’s legacy lives on and his vision is realized worldwide.
